A video reminder that burnouts are slightly harder than they look [Video]

Props to the owner of this evergreen Ford Mustang SVT Cobra for not editing this video to make it seem like he did the perfect burnout. He kept the camera rolling to demonstrate that a burnout is basically just a controlled loss of traction that can quickly turn into an out-of-control skid into the trees and almost did. More »

Nissan Leaf nets middling 78-point Consumer Reports score, still beats Volt

nissan leaf

Consumer Reports has wrapped up its five-month road test of the 2011 Nissan Leaf and reports the electric hatch scored 78 points. That puts the EV into the middle of six recently tested fuel-efficient hatchbacks. The Leaf ranked two points shy of the Toyota Prius and 11 points above the Chevrolet Volt. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid scored a disappointing 69, 20 points below the conventional Sonata GLS.

Of the Leaf, Consumer Reports states:

The Leaf is a civilized vehicle with very low running costs. It's quick, very quiet, rides comfortably and is easy to get in and out of. The Leaf's main drawbacks are a limited driving range of only about 75 miles per charge. The Leaf rides well but handling, though secure, lacks agility. Braking is Very Good. The interior is nicely finished but not posh.
As we all know and CR proved once again, the Leaf's range varies dramatically depending on driving style and weather conditions. For example, CR discovered that, under gentle driving conditions, the Leaf averaged 90 miles on a full charge. But in cold weather, CR's testers report the range dropped to approximately 60 miles. It's for this reason that CR refers to the Leaf as an urban runabout.

In terms of efficiency, the tested Leaf returned 3.16 miles per kWh, or the equivalent of 106 miles per gallon in mixed driving. The operating costs for CR's Leaf rang in at approximately 3.5 cents per mile, as figured at average national electricity rates of 11 cents per kWh. With reliability of the Nissan Leaf still unknown, CR has decided it can't put its Recommended tag on the electric hatch.

Sacrificing progress at the altar of cost. Executive shake-up underway at Ener1 as CEO resigns

Ener1 logoThe bankruptcy of Think Global is dragging Ener1 down even more, so an executive shake-up, it seems, is in order.

Ener1 announced changes to its senior leadership team this week, including the resignation of Charles Gassenheimer, the man formerly in charge as the Chief Executive Officer of Ener1.

The president of Ener1 and CEO of EnerDel, Christopher Cowger, will replace Gassenheimer as CEO. Board member Thomas Snyder will step in to take over Gassenheimer's role of non-executive chairman of Ener1's board. The changes are effective immediately and Ener1 fully expects Gassenheimer to resign from the firm's board of directors. In addition, Ener1's board of directors has been expanded to ten seats to include Cowger.

This shake-up comes amidst concerns of Ener1's future viability. Ener1 stock (NASDAQ ticker symbol HEV) closed Tuesday at $0.19 and has plummeted 94 percent over the past year.

Nissan's Twizy-based electric Mobility Concept to hit Japan's streets in October

Nissan New Mobility Concept

Nissan's Renault Twizy-based New Mobility Concept - an urban electric vehicle revealed back in November of 2010 - is just about ready to roam the roads in Japan.

On September 29, Nissan announced that seven electric Mobility Concepts will hit public streets in and around Yokohama, Japan as part of the automaker's urban mobility trial. The first batch of Mobility Concepts will be wheeled out October 15 and the second phase will kick off on November 17. That second stage is where local residents - and even tourists - will get to test the two-seat Mobility Concept on public roads.

Nissan's aim with these trials is to prove that the vehicle's maneuverability, compact dimensions (just 7.7 feet long) and zero-emissions driving at speeds of up to 50 miles per hour make perfect sense for most urban commuters. Seven vehicles should do it, no?

2012 BMW ActiveHybrid 5: A BMW Hybrid That Almost Makes Sense

With this 535i-based gas-electric, BMW finally moves toward mainstream hybrid appeal. BMW?s earlier steps into hybridization haven?t been the most decisive. The hybrid vehicles it has offered so far start at nearly $90,000 and don?t quite have the impressive fuel-economy numbers commonly associated with hybrids. The hybrid 7-series is rated by the EPA at 17 [...]
